What is a commodity?

The video defines commodities as standardized physical goods—energy, metals and agricultural products—and explains how prices are driven by supply/demand dynamics, seasonality, inventories, production cycles and geopolitical shocks. It walks through practical access routes (spot, futures, ETFs/CFDs) and market mechanics traders must master—contango/backwardation, roll costs, storage, margin and leverage—since those structural factors often determine net returns. If you’re deciding whether to engage, the clear takeaway is to focus on commodity-specific fundamentals (inventory reports, weather, export flows), enforce strict risk controls (position sizing, stops, hedging) and use low-cost, transparent execution because managing market structure and volatility matters more than simply picking a direction.

A Resource Guide: Commodity Prices and Indexes

This guide demystifies how commodity indexes produce returns by unpacking index construction, weighting and futures-roll methodologies and showing how contango/backwardation, storage costs, and roll yield—not spot price moves—often drive long-term performance. It supplies practical tools and best practices for investors: how to evaluate index methodology, compare ETF wrappers versus direct futures exposure, quantify implicit roll costs and liquidity constraints, and design rebalancing and hedging rules to manage volatility and drawdown. If you're deciding whether to engage, the resource gives concrete, actionable criteria—screening checklists and simple calculations—to choose indexes and products aligned with your horizon and commodity views and to avoid common pitfalls like hidden fees or misaligned roll schedules.

Metal Trading Explained | Samuel Basi | Ex-Trafigura metal trader

Basi explains that metal prices are driven by the tight interplay of physical supply/demand, exchange warehouse inventories, quality/grade differences and logistics bottlenecks, so successful traders monitor on‑the‑ground flows, specification mismatches and timely inventory data rather than relying solely on futures charts. He lays out pragmatic trade approaches — hedging with forwards and options, basis and carry trades to exploit contango/backwardation, inter‑warehouse and physical‑paper arbitrage — and stresses rigid credit controls, margin discipline and airtight contracts to control delivery and counterparty risk. If you're deciding whether to engage, the interview is most useful for prospective metal traders or commodity analysts who want hands‑on tactics: specialize by metal/region, build direct producer‑consumer relationships, master contract and logistics details first, and use data/analytics to convert those fundamentals into actionable trades.
