A Resource Guide: Commodity Prices and Indexes

This guide demystifies how commodity indexes produce returns by unpacking index construction, weighting and futures-roll methodologies and showing how contango/backwardation, storage costs, and roll yield—not spot price moves—often drive long-term performance. It supplies practical tools and best practices for investors: how to evaluate index methodology, compare ETF wrappers versus direct futures exposure, quantify implicit roll costs and liquidity constraints, and design rebalancing and hedging rules to manage volatility and drawdown. If you're deciding whether to engage, the resource gives concrete, actionable criteria—screening checklists and simple calculations—to choose indexes and products aligned with your horizon and commodity views and to avoid common pitfalls like hidden fees or misaligned roll schedules.
